How much older or younger is it OK to be with someone?*

by on September 1, 2010 | Comments CL(7) FB(0)

When I was 18, I was with a guy who was 40 years old. We were together for 9 years. I kept it a secret because I was too embarrassed of the age difference and what people would have thought.

Was I wrong? How much older or younger is it OK to be with someone? And what makes it OK?

That's pretty old. i mean when he's 60 you'll be 38. but i guess lots of old rich dudes get hot young honeys when they are baggin with cash. so i guess if he treats you good and is financially stable do it and keep him. in old times older guys married 16-18 years old all the time ripe for producing children. i hope as i age being single and grow richer i'll get a young hottie to make me young again.

To me age shouldn't matter, but there should be some sort of border line. I don't really judge those who date older people, but when it comes down to seeing a young girl with an old man it trips me out. For instance, I sometimes see older men that look over fifty holding hands with girls that look fresh out of high school, some I thought was the father untill I seen them kiss, and the other just grabbling all over her body. I don't mean to be mean, but to me that don't look right.

I don't think you're wrong for what you did because once you turn 18 you can date anyone that 18+. Just as long as a person respects you and treats you right, you shouldn't care of what people think.

@OneLove, sorry I didn't make myself clear on that, I think the age range that's appropriate should not go over 10 years. It's really a tough situation, they were together for 9 years, secrectively, if you have to hide the person "you love" for that long something is WRONG! So up until this person was 27 and the other party was 51 that age difference WAS a big issue. Maybe he couldn't get it up any longer...lol! I don't know and she was in her prime age to where she wanted to explore newer things. Or vice versa, if she was 51 and he was 27, that age difference is going to affect their lives, too much of a gap, i think.

@pnuttsfc - In your first paragraph, you said, "Age does not matter to me, ust as long as..." But in the second paragraph, you totally contradict this by saying that 22 year difference is too much. So up to what age difference is OK?

I have a 5-7 year cut off, 10 if you’re just fucking incredible lol. I don’t think you’re wrong for keeping it to yourself tho as long as you were happy it didn’t matter what others thought or felt. You know what age sometimes doesn’t matter at all if everything you need is in that sexy young thang.

Speaking of age difference...I am currently in a relationship with my girlfriend who is turning 41 this year and I am turning 33. We have been together for about 4 years strong. We always talked about communication and how important that is in EVERY relationship. That's key! If you cannot communicate about anything at any point in the relationship then its done. Age does not matter to me, just as long as you have that trust, communication and heart to understand each other than I don't see any reason for you go separate ways.

As far as dating someone that 18 and 40, I think that is a little bit over the top, my age difference with my girl is 8 years, that's a bigger difference than dating someone that's older than you by 22 years. That 40 year old needs to find someone closer to his/her age. That's just my opinion....

I don't know if there's a rule that applies in all situations. some people have older souls at an early age and can appreciate a more mature person. in some cases, older people need a younger mate to make them feel young. in the best cases, 2 people just love each other and should be together no matter the age difference. The only rule I would say is that as long as both parties are over 21, make whatever choices you want. anyone younger than that with an older mate just seems skeevy.
